There is an incredible energy that drives the Canadian indie-folk band The Franklin Electric. Shortly after their formation in 2012, they won a prestigious competition in Nashville. The band has released two EPs and four albums, was nominated for the Juno Awards as Breakthrough Group of the Year, and toured with Mumford & Sons and Ben Howard. Perhaps part of the magic lies in the charisma of frontman Jon Matte, whose Irish-Catholic home was filled daily with concerts in the form of family music—harmonized vocals, acoustic guitar, and fiddle. Jon puts it this way: “I make honest music for ordinary people.” You won’t hear a better understatement for music of such universal truth in a long time.
